The London Alcohol Summit: Evidence for investment in changing times. 29 November 2010 Kings Fund London.
In these times of economic constraint and fast paced healthcare reforms it is vital that alcohol remains on the agenda. Faced with these new realities how can we continue to deliver effective alcohol harm reduction strategies?
Chaired by Don Shenker, Chief Executive, Alcohol Concern, The London Alcohol Summit featured a series of presentations given by leading pubic health professionals and alcohol practitioners, as well as a thought provoking panel debate highlighting the challenges placed by alcohol on all aspects of the health, social care and criminal justice services and the cost benefits of more direct investment in the treatment and prevention of alcohol use disorders.
Presentations given looked at the progress made against delivering on the alcohol harm reduction framework and a consideration of options for improving delivery of services within the context of the Government's deficit reduction framework. Considerations were also given as to how the shift to GP commissioning will improve or challenge the development of an effective alcohol harm reduction response.
The afternoon session focused on a number of smaller workshops which presented evidenced practice in alcohol interventions in different settings including primary care, acute health care, criminal justice and older people.
