Developing Choice in Peer Support - The SMART Recovery Model
General Information
Title:
Developing Choice in Peer Support - The SMART Recovery Model
Description:
In most parts of England, Alcoholics Anonymous is the only peer-support option available to those wishing to seek help for their drinking. However, other options are available, such as SMART Recovery. This conference will provide research and practical experience on how SMART Recovery can benefit commissioners, treatment providers and service users.
The Alcohol Concern SMART Recovery Project has been helping to establish SMART Recovery groups across England. This conference will disseminate learning from the project and provide guidance to those who wish to expand peer-support options in their area.
Alcoholics Anonymous is an important aspect of the recovery landscape but it does not suit everyone. By increasing the choice and range of peer-support options more people with alcohol problems will get the support they need.
Conference chair: Professor Nick Heather (Northumbria University). Speakers include: Dr Joe Gerstein (Founding President SMART Recovery USA), Don Lavoie (Department of Health), Professor Susanne MacGregor and there will be presentations from Sheffield Alcohol Advisory Service (SAAS), South London YMCA and SMART Recovery UK.
